Established in 1937, the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum is a one-of-a-kind modern art museum located in the Upper East Side, within easy access to the New York Hotel Wales. The museum is an exceptional showcase of avant-garde art that bears the unique architectural design of Frank Lloyd Wright (his last major work).
At first glance from the street, the museum resembles a huge white ribbon that has been stacked cylindrically, with the top being a bit wider than the bottom (quite a contrast to the boxy buildings that surround it). Inside its walls, the Guggenheim spirals up to an elaborate glass ceiling, with paintings being displayed along the walls of the spirals and within special viewing rooms along the way.
The museum’s revolutionary design has given it an iconic presence on Museum Mile, and has led to the development of several more Guggenheims across the world in Las Vegas, Bilbao, Berlin, and Venice, which are all known for their unconventional architectural approach. Also, in order to maintain the Guggenheim’s unique presence in New York, an extensive renovation of the exterior facade will take place from 2007-2008.
