Constructed in 1872, the Metropolitan Museum of New York is one of the world’s largest and most significant art museums, featuring a permanent collection that includes over two million works. Casually referred to as the “Met”, the museum’s art covers a very extensive range, from prehistoric times to present day.
At the Metropolitan Museum, explore art from most of the European Masters, as well as African, Asian, Byzantine, Islamic, Oceanic, Egyptian, and American pieces. Apart from paintings and sculptures, browse a collection of musical instruments, costumes, accessories, antique weapons and armor from the annals of history. Occupying over two million square feet, stretching out over a quarter of a mile long, and being twenty times the size of the original building, viewing the “Met” is similar to viewing the Louvre in Paris, in which many people dedicate entire trips just to see as much of its art as they can.
The Metropolitan is made up of nineteen different departments, each with their own curators, scholars, and restorers. Departments include American Paintings and Sculpture, Ancient Near Eastern Art, European Paintings, Greek and Roman Art, and Medieval Art, among others. Discover hard-to-find works from a roster of the world’s greatest living and deceased artists such as Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci, Rembrandt, Van Gogh, Velázquez, Botticelli, Jones, Pollock, and many more.
While staying at the New York Hotel Wales, the myriad of excellent art at the Metropolitan Museum New York is all located a few blocks away. Come explore a world of art that is quite possibly the best representation of the progression and development of the world’s art from the beginnings of civilization to the modern day.
