If you happen to be in New York City in June, be sure to check out the Museum Mile Festival, an annual event that celebrates all of the Mile’s great museums on every second Tuesday of June. During this grand art festival, each museum is open and free to the public and 23 blocks of Fifth Avenue, from 82nd and 105th will be closed off from traffic. Plus, at this unforgettable street party there will be several outdoor concerts featuring great live entertainment, street performers of all kinds, street art exhibitions, and plenty of fun activities for the kids. The Museum Mile Festival is the perfect opportunity to explore nine of the country’s finest museums, while taking part in the festive summertime New York culture. This year looks to be better than ever, with over 50,000 visitors expected, it just might be worth your while to explore the following museums along the Museum Mile, just a block away from the Hotel Wales:
El Museo del Barrio – Founded in 1969 by a fellowship of Puerto Rican teachers, artists, and community activists, El Museo del Barrio began as an institution to celebrate and represent the budding Puerto Rican community in New York. Since then, the museum has developed into a thriving, expansive museum that now represents all of Latino culture, from the Caribbean to Central and South America, making it the only one of its kind in New York. In light of recent renovations throughout, there’s never been a better time to explore Latin history and culture through art at the Museo del Barrio.
Museum of the City of New York – A Big Apple staple for decades, the Museum of the City of New York is a historical institution which focuses on New York’s impact and involvement on the rest of the world. This year at the festival, several fascinating exhibitions will be on display including Facing Fascism: New York and the Spanish Civil War, Timescapes: a photographical trip through time to New York City’s original settlement and Robert Roses and the Modern City, and Costumes and Characters: The Designs of Adam Colt featuring award-winning costumes from off and on Broadway.
The Jewish Museum – Commemorating the abundant Jewish culture of New York City, the Jewish Museum features ever-changing exhibitions that offer a unique perspective into Jewish history, culture, traditions, and awe-inspiring art. At the Museum Mile festival this year among many exhibitions on display, take a look at Dateline Israel: New Photography and Video Art, where daily life in Israel provides inspiration for 23 internationally-renown artists.
Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum – A symbol for New York’s cutting edge modernity and ever-changing cityscape, the Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum features the latest and greatest in product, home, fashion, and architectural design. Showcasing the work of the world’s greatest designers, a trip through this museum allows one to take in the consistently evolving world of design and learn truly how far we’ve come and just how far we’ve still yet to go.
National Academy Museum – A museum that focuses on the enormous scope of American art from the 18th century to present day, the Academy not only a famous city institution, its also a noted School of Fine Arts. The Metropolitan Museum of Art – Commemorating over 5,000 years of art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art is a world-famous institution which heralds art from the Greek, Roman, Asian, and pre-historic times, to exhibitions on the Modernist movement in Barcelona, Spain and American classical art extending from the 18th century. The “Met” is one of the most widely-visited museums in the world, and with its huge permanent collection and ever-changing special exhibitions, it is certain to be a centerpiece to the Museum Mile Festival.
