The Hotel Wales Launches Room Package to Benefit New York City Audubon Society
Percentage of room rate donated to Urban Bird Preservation Programs
New York, NY – March 19, 2005
The Hotel Wales, located one block from Central Park in Carnegie Hill, has just launched a new room package that offers both a discounted rate
for guests and a benefit for the New York Audubon Society. The new "Pale Male" rate is $259* per night of which $25 dollars will be donated to
the New York Audubon Society for their various awareness and preservation activities in support of New York City’s diverse urban bird population.
Like many New Yorkers, Wales General Manager, Andrew Labetti, was disheartened by the news that Pale Male’s nest had been dismantled.
He reached out to the NYC Audubon Society and found out that while Pale Male was the star of the city's bird population there was much more
going on. The Wales is launching this package to support the NYC Audubon Society's work to improve Pale Male's situation and to benefit all
their projects. In addition to the package, the hotel has opened its doors to the NYC Audubon as a place to hold lectures and a starting point
for bird walks in Central Park.
People interested to make room reservations under the Pale Male package can call locally at 212-876-6000, toll free at 866-925-3746 or visit www.waleshotel.com for more details. For more information about the New York City Audubon Society, please visit www.nycaudubon.org.
About the New York Audubon Society
Since 1979, the New York City Audubon Society has been pioneering the protection of grasslands, woodlands, wetlands and wildlife throughout the five boroughs, the new chapter addressed the critical task of preserving New York City's natural habitats. That small beginning grew to a membership of over 8,000 environmentally-committed city residents, becoming the largest of National Audubon Society’s 518 chapters. Some of the current NYC Audubon projects include: the Harbor Herons Project, Project Safelight, the Natural Areas Initiative and the Grassland Restoration and Management Project (GRAMP).
The Harbor Herons Project protects the nesting site and breeding of herons, egrets and ibises in the city. Additionally the NYC Audubon Harbor Herons Project monitors the nesting patterns of colonial birds on uninhabited islands off Staten Island, Bronx and Queens and conducts an annual census.
Project Safeflight builds awareness of New York City’s role in the migratory path of birds and the obstacle lighted windows are to the bird’s midnight flight. Windows kill millions of birds each year and the NYC Audubon Society works to persuade business to turn off their lights at night during migration and New York has a lot of windows.
The Natural Areas Initiative was established in 2001 by New Yorkers for Parks (NY4P) and the NYC Audubon to ensure long-term protection and management of the natural areas of New York City. There are currently 173 natural areas which include 12,000 acres of estuaries, forests, ponds and other habitats. NAI works to increase public awareness of natural areas and their benefits as well as to foster cooperation between non-profit groups, communities, and government agencies toward their protection.
The Grassland Restoration and Management Project (GRAMP) is the first conservation project that engaged the New York City chapter of the Audubon (NYCA) when it was founded in 1979.The project originated with the Citizen’s Liaison Committee for the Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge. By managing the grasslands crucial feeding and roosting habitat for migrating grassland birds, and a welcome respite from the city for birders and other recreationists remain healthy and in balance.
